Misconceptions
And Other Points as
They Arise
- The phrase "separate but equal" has been widely
bandied about. There's a little more to it than that.
It should be rendered - separate and "different" but
equal. The operative word being different. As I say
in my mini thesis on Gay Marriage; 'no one can deny
that it's not different'. Which is why it should not
be designated as "marriage". Something it never can
or ever will be - by Divine decree.
- In the matter of private conscience; there is an
episode in the film "A Man for all Seasons" that is
apropos here. King Henry wants to marry Anne Boleyne,
but as the Pope is not disposed to grant him a divorce
from Catherine, he resorts to having Parliament pass
an Act of Secession (from the Church of Rome) and
installing himself as the Supreme head of the Church
of England. The King is backed by almost everyone
except the highly regarded Thomas More. More will not
be swayed - for which he will forfeit his life.
Cardinal Wosely tries to get him to give his assent to
this Act: he asks More to explain "how you, as a
Councillor of England can obstruct these measures for
the sake of your own private conscience". More
replies; "Well, I think that when statesmen forsake
their own private conscience for the sake of their
public duties, they lead their country by a short
route to chaos".
Would that we had more like Thomas More in our public
servants today. I show you the times.
- A while back, we had the spectacle of Minister Dosanjh
in speaking with reference to the admonitions of the
Spiritual Head of the Sikh religion in India saying
the following. 'Well, you know Paul Martin is
Catholic and its OK for him to vote for same-sex
marriage, so it's OK for us Sikhs to do so as well.'
(Or words to that effect.)
Oh well, of course, that makes it alright, doesn't
it. I show you the times.
